Early Life and Career
Michael Ballack was born on September 26, 1976, in Görlitz, East Germany. He began his professional career with Chemnitzer FC in 1995, before moving to Kaiserslautern in 1997.
Ballack quickly established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga, and helped Kaiserslautern win the Bundesliga title in 1998. He also made his international debut for Germany in 1999.
Move to Bayern Munich
In 2002, Ballack joined Bayern Munich, where he spent the next four seasons. He won three Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokals, and the Champions League in 2001.
Ballack was named the German Footballer of the Year in 2003 and 2005, and was also named to the FIFA World XI in 2004 and 2005.
Move to Chelsea
In 2006, Ballack joined Chelsea, where he spent the next four seasons. He won the Premier League title in 2010, as well as the FA Cup in 2007 and 2009.
Ballack was named the Chelsea Player of the Year in 2008, and was also named to the PFA Team of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
Return to Germany
In 2010, Ballack returned to Germany to join Bayer Leverkusen. He spent two seasons with Leverkusen, before retiring in 2012.
Ballack made 98 appearances for Germany, scoring 42 goals. He was a member of the German team that finished runner-up at the 2002 World Cup and third at the 2006 World Cup.
Post-Retirement
Since retiring, Ballack has worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and ESPN. He has also been involved in several charity projects.
Ballack is considered one of the greatest German footballers of all time. He was a gifted midfielder with a powerful shot, excellent passing ability, and a strong work ethic.
